If you’re a regular reader of this website, or have been to any of my talks, you’ve likely heard me say that you can pay for wellness (with good food, yoga classes, whole-food based supplements, etc.), or you can pay for healthcare and disease (with prescription medications, surgical procedures, doctor’s visits, etc). Either way, you’re going to have to spend money — it’s just a matter of whether or not that money will actually keep or get you well.
I spend a lot of money on food, and on tools that make cooking easier, more fun, or more flavorful. One thing that I think we all need to own is healthy cookware. Cast iron and stainless steel cookware are great, and can often be found used, or on sale. Non-stick cookware is one place where I wouldn’t scrimp, and wouldn’t buy used. I only products that don’t contain PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene, better known as Teflon), or PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic acid). PTFE, found in much non-stick cookware, becomes toxic at high temperatures. PFOA has been linked to cancer, thyroid disease, ulcerative colitis, and high cholesterol (http://www.c8sciencepanel.org/prob_link.html).
I recently discovered Greenpan, and really like their products. They are sturdy, conduct heat well and evenly, and can withstand temperatures of up to 850°F (so you can stick it in the oven, if necessary). Ozeri makes a pan that is also PTFE and PFOA free, though I haven’t used their products. And there are others out there, of course: just make sure you’re reading the labels before you buy non-stick cookware for yourself or anyone else.
