The Longevity Habits That Reversed My Biological Age
I recently sat down with Justine Reichman on the Essential Ingredients podcast for one of the more honest conversations I have had on record. We covered a lot of ground: thirty years of research, leaving academia, building a wellness brand on word of mouth alone, and the October morning in 2023 when everything changed.
But the finding that surprised even me was this: during the hardest year of my life, my biological age went backward.

What Biological Age Actually Measures
Most of us track chronological age — the number on our passport. Biological age measures something different: how old your cells actually are, based on markers like glycan patterns, epigenetic signatures, and inflammatory load. Your biological age can be years younger than your calendar age, or years older, depending on the conditions your body has been living in.
I test mine through GlycanAge. In August 2024, my biological age was 53 — seven years younger than my chronological age. By March 2025, it had dropped to 49. Eleven years younger.
Those results came during the year I was grieving my husband, Doug, who died in a paragliding accident in October 2023.
This is the part that matters: the daily longevity habits I had built over three decades did not pause for grief. They held. And the data reflected that.
Why Consistency Outperforms Circumstance
One of the things Justine and I kept returning to in this conversation is the gap between what people think resilience looks like and what it actually is. Most people imagine resilience as something you summon in a crisis. The research suggests it is something you build long before you need it.
The longevity habits I practice are not complicated. Whole plant foods. Movement every day. Sleep treated as non-negotiable. Time-restricted eating. Cold water exposure. A supplement protocol grounded in the science, not the marketing. These are not dramatic interventions. They are the infrastructure of a body that can handle what life brings.
What I found in the year after Doug died is that these habits did not require willpower in a season when I had very little. They were simply what I did. The body does not sit still, and neither does the investment you make in it.
The Brain Science Behind Cold Plunging
Cold water exposure activates a region called the anterior mid-cingulate cortex, the part of the brain tied to willpower and, significantly, what researchers describe as the will to live. This is not a metaphor. It is a measurable neurological response to doing something hard that you did not want to do.
I leaned on this deliberately after losing Doug. Not because I had read a study about it, but because it was one of the few things that made me feel like myself again. The science came later, and confirmed what the practice had already taught me.
Why Comparing Yourself to Your Younger Body Is Biologically Counterproductive
Stop comparing yourself to your 25-year-old body. Not for motivational reasons. For biological ones.
Every time you access a memory, that memory changes slightly. The body you are comparing yourself to is not the body you actually had at 25. It is a version of it, altered by every retrieval, layered with everything you have felt about it since. The comparison itself triggers cortisol and inflammation. It is not neutral. It is actively working against the biology you are trying to support.
The more useful benchmark is neurogenesis. Superagers in their 80s are still generating new neurons in the hippocampus. The question is not whether you can return to a younger body. The question is whether you are creating the conditions for your brain and body to keep building.
Food Cravings Are Not a Willpower Problem
One of the most freeing things I have learned in thirty years of nutrition research is that what you crave is largely determined by the bacteria living in your gut, not by your character or your discipline.
Your gut microbiome shifts based on what you feed it. Feed it plant-based fiber, polyphenols, and diversity, and the bacteria that thrive on those foods multiply. Feed it processed sugar and refined carbohydrates, and a different population takes over. Those populations send signals to your brain that shape what you reach for next.
This means that changing what you eat is not primarily a matter of trying harder. It is a matter of shifting the population gradually. And once it shifts, the cravings shift with it.
